National Hook-Up of Black Women, Inc. - Joliet Chapter
The Joliet Chapter was established in October 1991. It is a non-profit 501(c)3 charitable community service organization dedicated to improving the lives of families through support of the arts, culture, health, education, and human services programs.
The Joliet Chapter of the National Hook-Up of Black Women, Inc, was founded in 1991 under the direction of Dorothy J. Campbell. The charter members are Mrs. Gretta Whitted (first president), Dr. Mattie Barnes, Mrs. Helen McKenzie, Mrs. Deborah Summers, Ms. Robin Whitted, Mrs. Nancina Grays, Mrs. Sandra Betts, Mrs. Ora Jones, Mrs. Ruby Williams, and Mrs. Gwen Barlow. These concerned women saw a need for an active and collective voice on women’s issues in the Joliet community. NHBW Joliet Chapter carries out the national mission locally by creating an atmosphere which enables women to effect meaningful changes. NHBW works to improve the quality of life, facilitate family preservation, achieve self-empowerment, and promote economic development. Membership reflects a diversity of women from varied business, professional, and community disciplines crossing all economic, social and educational levels.
We provide FREE health and wellness screenings and seminars for the community with the collaboration of local hospitals and physicians
We provide FREE leadership and life skill programs for boys and girls, ages 8 – 18.
We provide FREE empowerment seminars for parents in the community.
We provide FREE books to the community through the Reading for Life program.
We provide FREE leadership training and opportunities for our membership.
We welcome partnerships that will benefit the community.
We champion initiatives improving the quality of life for the family.
Our organization is supported through membership dues, donations and fundraisers. All programs and services are presented to the community at no cost. The NHBW, Inc. is a member of the National Black United Federation of Charities.
